WASHINGTON (July 14, 2021) – The American Chemistry Council (ACC) issued the following statement regarding today’s Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee markup of energy infrastructure legislation.

“We commend Chairman Manchin and Ranking Member Barrasso for holding today’s markup of legislation to help spur development and deployment of clean energy technologies and sources. Our nation needs innovative solutions such as hydrogen, advanced nuclear, and carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) as well as new ways to save energy and expand transmission capacity, and each is included in the bill. We welcome provisions that advance energy efficiency and voluntary building energy codes. We urge prompt consideration on the floor.

“We support language in Title III that would authorize and finance regional CCUS hubs. This creative approach will advance an important abatement solution – one that several chemistry companies are exploring, developing, or bringing online. It would make sense to site one or more of these hubs along the Gulf Coast, the region where most of America’s basic petrochemical manufacturing takes place. We look forward to further discussion of this concept.

“American chemistry creates a variety of materials and technologies necessary to modernize infrastructure and create climate solutions. In April, ACC issued a set of policy recommendations to enable dramatic reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. They include ways to increase government investment and scientific resources to develop and deploy low-emissions technologies in the manufacturing sector.”
